15-03-2025

The 2016 African Championship was a triumph for Samb, marking the only time in his career that he won this tournament. He scored 25 points from 17 games, finishing three points ahead of second-place Alain Bukasa Dingombe (Democratic Republic of Congo) and third-place Jean Marc Ndjofang (Cameroon). In round 4, the Senegalese player laid the foundation for his tournament victory with a beautiful win over Denos Joachim Ano Adonis from Ivory Coast, the eventual 4th-place finisher.

Ndiaga Samb - Denos Joachim Ano Adonis (22-09-2016)

12.34-29...The starting signal for the type of game based on attack versus encirclement. 12....16-2113.29x2019-2314.28x1913x1515.31-269-13
16.33-29...Samb prevents his opponent from easily developing his right wing with 22-28. 16....14-1917.37-3210-1418.41-374-919.40-3522-2820.32x2319x28
21.38-32...The first of a series of three attacks, primarily aimed at creating weaknesses in Black’s hinterland. 21....13-1922.32x2319x2823.43-388-1324.48-432-8
25.38-32...The previous four moves have caused Black to lose their piece on 2 and, with it, the 2/8/13 formation. White attacks the Black outpost once again, forcing new weaknesses in Black’s position. 25....13-1926.32x2319x2827.42-388-13
28.38-33...Black’s previous move was not illogical. However, as a consequence, the exchange 17-22x21, which would have developed Black’s short wing, is no longer an option. Samb now attacks the outpost on 28 via square 33. At first glance, Ado Adonis can easily bring his short wing into play. That is indeed the case, but the price he pays is the loss of the 3/9/14 formation, as he certainly does not want to play 18-22. 28....3-829.33x2217x2830.26x1711x22
31.29-24...White immediately tries to take advantage of the absence of the important 3/9/14 and 2/8/13 formations. The White piece on 24 becomes a thorn in Black’s side. 31....6-11
Perhaps 31...12-17directly is stronger. 32.36-31!...Played to keep Black off square 27. From now on, White has a serious advantage, according to the draughts engine Scan. 32....11-17?!Black would be wise to bring his inactive pieces on 8 and 9 into play with 32...14-1933.43-3819x3034.35x249-14, followed by the development 12-17 and 8-12, ensuring that he always has the exchange 13-19 at his disposal. This way, he seems to be able to successfully fend off White's encirclement attempts. 33.43-38!17-21Now, 33...14-19?s no longer possible: 34.38-32!19x3035.32x23!18x2936.35x33+-34.39-34!...
34....18-23?!The following two small variants illustrate Black's problems: 34...21-27?35.34-30!27x3636.24-2015x2437.30x109-1438.10x1913x2439.35-30!24x3540.25-20+-34...14-19?35.34-29!19x3036.35x24and after 36....21-27?37.44-39!27x3638.38-32White fully takes over the attack.

Possibly, Black's best move in the diagram position is 34...12-17, but he no longer has the luxury of playing freely.
35.44-3921-2736.34-30!27x3637.38-32!!...
Beautifully played! Thanks to small combinations, White does not need to immediately recover the lost piece. 37....15-20?White threatens with 38. 24-20! +, and 37...14-19??is, of course, not an option due to the simple 38.47-41!36x4739.39-3447x2040.25x3+-Therefore, Black should have played 37...36-4138.47x36first and then 38....14-19However, because Black lost control of square 27, all chances have shifted to White.

After the incorrect move in the game, undoubtedly a result of the surprise he was faced with, it is doubtful whether there is any rescue left for Black in an analytical sense. He doesn’t find a solution in the game.
38.24x157-11More defense provides 38...12-1739.30-24!11-1640.25-20!14x2541.15-109-1442.10x1923x1443.32x23...
43....22-27Even after other moves, Black either loses a piece or White breaks through. 44.24-2014-1945.23x1413-1946.14x2325x14
47.35-30...A new attacker is already ready. 47....16-2148.30-2421-26
49.24-20...White goes straight for the win and breaks through to king. 49....14x2550.23-1927-32The endgame after 50...26-3151.37x2627-32and so on is also hopeless. 51.37x2826-3152.19-1431-3753.14-10...
53....25-30It's also quickly over after 53...36-4154.47x3637-4255.10-442-4842-4756.4-15!and now 56.45-40!48x4557.28-2345x1858.4x22+-54.10-437-4255.47x3836-4156.38-33...Black resigns.
